Oscar Niemeyer was a Brazilian architect considered to be one of the key figures in the development of modern architecture. Niemeyer was most famous for his use of abstract forms and curves and wrote in his memoirs:

'”I am not attracted to straight angles or to the straight line, hard and inflexible, created by man. I am attracted to free-flowing, sensual curves. The curves that I find in the mountains of my country, in the sinuousness of its rivers, in the waves of the ocean, and on the body of the beloved woman. ROCINHA earrings, from RIO collection

In Rio de Janeiro, it is common to see numerous favelas, each with an architectural signature of box-shaped, flat-roofed makeshift homes, stacked upon each other on the hillside. Rocinha is the largest favela in Brazil. Built on a very steep hillside overlooking the city, it developed from a shanty town into an urbanized slum. Today, most of its’ houses are made from concrete and brick. Since their inception, favelas have had negative associations – crime, violence, poverty and drugs.
